NO WAY TO 33K

The launch of the No Way To 33K Campaign follows the Government's publication of its proposed modifications to the Regional Spatial Strategy for the South West. Housing numbers for South Gloucestershire have been increased yet again to 32,800 - well above the 21,500 new houses the council agreed is the most it could take. The latest figure is even higher than the Panel Report's figure of 30,800. There will now be a 12 week period of public consultation on Ministers' proposed changes, which will end on 17th October.

Matthew Riddle, Prospective Conservative MP for the new Thornbury and Yate Consituency, said: "No Way To 33K recognises the need to build some affordable and social housing for local people, but by plucking this 33k figure out of thin air, the Government has, in effect, given the
go-ahead to the deletion of whole communities who will see themselves swallowed up with new housing developments."

"I am glad that pressure from the council and local residents has seen the 5,000 homes in the Yate area reduced to 3,000, however, Ministers have merely moved these 2,000 plus homes elsewhere in South Glos, particularly to the area east of Kingswood. This represents even more of a threat to places such as Shortwood and Pucklechurch."

"A tide of concrete is on the horizon and I would urge anyone who doesn't want to see our area turn from shades of green into shades of concrete-grey to make their feelings known to Hazel Blears now. This is one of the biggest issues to face South Gloucestershire in a generation and we want to show Ministers what a strong and united community we are, so please log on and sign our online No Way To 33K petition - we're aiming for it to be the largest e-petition ever launched in South Gloucestershire."

The three Parliamentary candidates announced the formation of the No Way To 30K campaign earlier this month and wrote to the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat group leaders on South Gloucestershire Council. The campaign has been renamed No Way To 33K, following the increase in housing numbers. South Gloucestershire Council's Conservative group was the FIRST group to pledge its support to No Way To 33K.
