ALVESTON POST OFFICE SUCCESS
Local Conservative activists pulled out all the stops to keep the popular village post office off the Government’s closure list.
Before the local elections, some of our efforts included:
· setting up the cross-community Hands Off Our Post Office (HOOPO) campaign group (you may have seen the young blue t-shirt wearing team doing the rounds!);
· going up every road in the village urging local residents to sign the parish council’s petition;
After the local elections, some of our efforts included:
· enlisting the high profile support of Alan Duncan MP - the Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform – who is continuing to lead the Westminster charge against the Government’s cost-cutting post office closure programme;
· making advanced preparations to hold a mass protest rally at Greenhill Parade with the support of many local organisations (thankfully our earlier efforts in the year meant this wasn’t needed in the end!);
Commenting, Matthew Riddle, the local Parliamentary candidate, said: “I’m delighted that our efforts – in combination with those of the parish council – paid off, especially for Alveston’s elderly and vulnerable residents who are heavily dependent on the services offered by the local post office.”
Following the good news about the future of Alveston Post Office, Matthew moved the post office rally to Tytherington, who are still fighting to keep their post office open.
