YATE to get new HGV weight limit
Local campaigners are delighted following a council decision to implement a much-needed weight limit along certain roads in Yate.
South Gloucestershire Council has decided to implement a 7.5T weight restriction for A432 Station Road and along predominantly residential Cranleigh Court Road and Church Road to restrict the movement of HGVs along these streets.
A signed alternative route of Stover Road, Iron Acton Way, Goose Green Way and the Link Road is the prescribed route for HGV’s. However, residents living along Cranleigh Court Road and Church Road have expressed concerns about HGVs using their streets as short cuts between Station Road and Goose Green Way. In addition, the results of an HGV traffic survey carried out by the council in August 2008 showed that a considerable number of HGV's are continuing both to access Station Road via other roads and use it as a through route.
Local campaigner, Matthew Riddle, who is the prospective Conservative MP for the new Thornbury and Yate constituency, said:
“I very much welcome this decision and I am sure it will come as a huge relief to many local residents.”
“Those living along Cranleigh Court Road and Church Road have had to put up with HGVs thundering past their homes when they should not have been. In addition, there are obvious road safety issues for those pedestrians who need to cross Station Road to access local shops and other facilities.”
“Support for a weight limit along these roads was clear from the results that came back in my most recent residents’ survey. Local people have been asking for action for many years and the council’s recent traffic count showed that action needed to be taken.”
“Once in place, this much-needed weight limit should improve road safety, reduce congestion and air pollution and improve the quality of life for those living along these routes.”
