South Gloucestershire Fixing Potholes

Local residents in South Gloucestershire have welcomed news that more potholes are now due to be fixed, following a surge of funding from the Government.

Emerging from a Winter which saw further deterioration to rural roads and countryside lanes throughout our towns and villages, it has now been revealed how the Government is helping South Gloucestershire Council to resurface more roads and fill more potholes.

In a letter from the Secretary of State for Transport to the local MP Luke Hall, it has been confirmed that the Government is providing £8.3 billion of extra roads resurfacing funding for English local highway authorities between 2023/24 to 2033/34. For the West of England region, this includes a funding increase of over £2m which has been made possible by reallocated HS2 funding, and a further £2.8m that was announced in last year’s Spring budget.

To ensure the Council are held to account, the Department for Transport has mandated that as of last week, the Local Authority must submit a summary of the additional work that they will be delivering with the new Government funding over the next two-year period. This will be followed by quarterly reports to the Department, to ensure the works are progressing as planned.

Local Councillor Becky Romaine said, “This significant investment for South Gloucestershire is extremely welcome news, and I will be working with residents and local Councillors to ensure this funding is being spent in the right areas.”
